The Watchers is an upcoming American supernatural horror film written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine. It stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan, and Olwen Fouéré.

Filming took place from July to September 2023. It is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 14, 2024.

What’s The Watchers’ Plot All About?

The Watchers is centered around 28-year-old Mina, who finds herself stranded in the neverending woods of West Ireland after a car breakdown. Before the unfortunate turn, down-on-her-luck artist Mina was on her way to deliver a parrot to a buyer for a good amount of money.

During her search for… well, anything… Mina comes across a structure that she is dragged into by a woman, leaving her stuck in a cabin with three strangers and a promise of certain death outside from the creatures that haunt the woods at night.

The simple structure only has a light that activates at night and a glass wall, through which the creatures observe the humans, mimic their appearances, and attack them should they step out from under the light.

The three strangers Mina becomes trapped with are the strict and paternal Madeline, the struggling widow Ciara, and the troubled teenager Daniel. Before the events of The Watchers, the group had another member, Ciara’s husband John, who was believed to have been killed by the monsters after an escape attempt.

Eventually, the group discovers a room filled with computers and resources under the cabin, along with a video from an Irish professor called David Kilmartin.

In the video, Kilmartin, details his research into Irish folklore, as part of which he built this cabin to hide away in overnight while he observed the Watchers as his team was slaughtered in the foods through the dark.

KIlmartin also appears to offer a method of escape through a compass and directions to a boat from which escape would be possible before nightfall.

The group executes this plan but the young Daniel is tricked into chasing after one of the monsters, disguised as Ciara’s lost husband John, only for him to be massacred while the rest escape and make their way home.

The Watchers Premise

28-year-old artist Mina gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. Upon finding shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.^[1]

Development and casting

In February 2023, it was announced that New Line Cinema would produce The Watchers, written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan in her feature directorial debut.^[1] That April, Dakota Fanning and Georgina Campbell joined the cast of the film.^[2][4]

The Watchers Filming

Principal photography took place in Dublin, Wicklow and Galway from July to September 2023.^[3][5] In mid-July, production was granted an interim agreement to continue filming during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.^[3]

The Watchers Release date

The Watchers is scheduled to be theatrically released on June 14, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.^[6] It was originally scheduled for June 7.^[1]
